Overview

Industrial Bluetooth modules can deliver 200 m line-of-sight range and reliable operation through concrete floors — but only when the right combination of PHY mode, antenna, output power, channel selection, and mesh routing is applied. This article lists the measures that work in practice.

Coded PHY (S=2, S=8)

BLE 5.x coded PHY trades data rate for range and robustness. S=2 gives 2x coding gain at half the data rate; S=8 gives 4x coding gain at quarter rate. For metering applications, S=8 typically doubles effective range compared with 1M PHY.

Antenna and Output Power

External antenna and +20 dBm output power (the regulatory maximum in most regions) together extend range by 6–10 dB compared with chip antenna at +8 dBm. In a metal-cabinet installation, this is the difference between working and not working.

Channel Selection and Frequency Hopping

Bluetooth Mesh hops across the 2.4 GHz band. Avoiding the three most-used Wi-Fi channels (1, 6, 11) reduces coexistence losses by 30–50% in dense Wi-Fi environments.

Mesh Routing

Careful placement of relay-capable nodes ensures every meter has at least two routing paths to the gateway. In Rynon field experience, dual-path coverage cuts end-to-end packet loss by 5–10x compared with single-path.
